Medical Genetics Unit
The unit comprises the following areas/activities:
- The genetics clinic: The genetics clinic diagnoses genetic diseases, studies the family pedigree for calculation of the recurrence risk of a genetic disease and if there is any tool for prevention and guides patients in taking the right decisions.
- The cytogenetics laboratory and the molecular laboratory: provide premarital genetic testing, prenatal genetic diagnosis, chromosomal studies in delayed physical & mental growth, congenital abnormalities, delayed puberty in both sexes, reproduction failure and also for products of conception. Screening tests are also done for mothers in the first and second trimesters of pregnancy and for newborns. FISH study is done in some diseases as well as DNA assay for hemoglobinopathies and for cardiovascular diseases.
